It is the only part of the current Taiwanese territory that the Chinese Communist Party has physically attacked. The destructive artillery battle caused a large number of casualties that year. Kinmen Island, only two kilometers from Xiamen, is the closest territory of the Republic of China (Taiwan) to the mainland. In the past, it was the frontline of the cross-strait conflict. At one time, Taiwanese regarded Kinmen as a daunting place to be stationed when serving their military conscription. The tensions between Taiwan and China are concentrated and realized through the history of this small island that lies within swimming distance of the mainland. The events, atmosphere, and daily life of people on this island are a unique lens to view the broader relationship between the two countries. Kinmen is the focal point of a cold war relationship locked into a decades-long stalemate; while locals continue to live under the influence of this atmosphere, fascinatingly- life continues ceaselessly. In 1958 when the intensity of war conflict began to cool down, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) announced they would only fire missiles every other day, an ironic pretense of continuing to fight when they had clearly lost the momentum or willpower to take this land. This situation lasted until 1978 when America switched diplomatic recognition of Chinese leadership from Taipei to Beijing. Within two weeks, the missiles firing from mainland China ceased to mark the passing of each Monday, Wednesday, Friday, and Sunday. The story I wish to tell takes place in the '80s; no crazy cannons are firing. Ken Yeh, stationed on little Kinmen (a smaller island in the group that make up greater Kinmen), was the only medical officer on his frontier island. The two years he spent witnessed rough challenges, but somehow humor and surrealism shine through in his collection of absurdly ridiculous stories. This collection archives my father's oral stories, condensed into a representative object for each episode that captures the contrast of daily life while living at the center of a never-ending conflict. Hanging from the ceiling scattered in random clusters will be old-fashioned bulky TVs that display the clips from my father's narration of each story in Mandarin. There will be a speaker system for surround sound ambiance that plays a track of ocean waves, propaganda loudspeaker recordings, and the sounds of missiles overhead and explosions in the distance. This is the first layer of reality. &nbsp; The guests will use AR to explore a second layer of the exhibition which is my imagination of how these objects will all exist in a surreal, floating space that allows them to be engaged with the viewer's screen. In the AR layer, my father's stories will be enhanced with a burst of text that visualizes when he speaks a keyword that has a preplanned typography prepared to accompany the story and provide background detail or emphasis on topics. As the users walk, sisal plants continue to grow at high speed, filling the spaces around each person with more and more spiky plants. The floating objects, like an ear, will emerge from the corners in imaginary waves, giving time for each item to be examined by the viewer, clicking or selecting the objects will open a new text window that loads a story for each one and has special interactive links within the story for keywords and topics to explain. The core concept of this exhibition is to facilitate a conversation between two generations and reflect the shadow of this neglected period of history onto our present-day worldview. Tai-roglyphics to re-design a typeface based on Taiwanese vernacular graphics. Due to historical context, many Chinese traditions only remain practiced in Taiwan. Not only do we retain the traditional Chinese characters to write and read, but we also preserve the Chinese phonetic alphabet (Zhuyin) to help us learn the pronunciation of Chinese characters. There is an internet phenomenon where the Taiwanese use our Zhuyin alphabet to leave political messages online to avoid cyberbullying. This work reflects the crisis of self-censorship we are facing. After interviewing Shan Wu, theTaiwanese Calarts alumni who did an identity-related project, we all share the concern and fear of drawing attention from Chinese internet monitoring that discovers us as Taiwanese independence supporters. Anyone that makes any media in the Chinese language has to walk on eggshells around the topic of Taiwan. This project introduces a "tool” in the form of an encryption system. This typeface gives artists, designers, and anyone with primary education in Taiwan a mechanism to combat Chinese censorship. Can the connotation of a specific color or shape give rise to our memory of the humid summer night market buzz? Can the motion of the light’s glow remind people of the ten-days Mazu pilgrimage they walked along? Can a VR immersive experience let viewers understand the surreal charm and depth of our funeral ceremony? This VR game, Bai-Bye, took place during my grandpa's passing and inspired this documentation process of both mundane and extraordinary details in the Taiwanese funeral ceremony. The goal of this project is not to create complete reenactments of funeral scenes. Instead, it is to give participants a point of common ground that sparks their memory to reflect on personal experience. Many funerals in Taiwan will be led by a Daoist monk, whose main tool is a book of scriptures for each participant and his wooden fish drum that he plays a beat to lead the chanting rhythm. In this game, the player is equipped with a traditional wooden drum and drumstick; using real hand motions, they can play the instrument in VR.&nbsp; In the opening scene, golden paper that we burn in funeral tradition is visible floating through the air, surrounding the player with Taiwanese funeral motifs. After crossing the Naihe bridge that transports people into the afterlife, you are invited to my grandpa’s paper house and the welcoming party for his arrival. Using my artistic style of surrealism, I modified the design of traditional funeral cultural specimens to transform familiar objects into modern iterations. Hanging from the ceiling scattered in random clusters will be old-fashioned bulky TVs that display the clips from my father's narration of each story in Mandarin. There will be a speaker system for surround sound ambiance that plays a track of ocean waves, propaganda loudspeaker recordings, and the sounds of missiles overhead and explosions in the distance. This is the first layer of reality. &nbsp; The guests will use AR to explore a second layer of the exhibition which is my imagination of how these objects will all exist in a surreal, floating space that allows them to be engaged with the viewer's screen. In the AR layer, my father's stories will be enhanced with a burst of text that visualizes when he speaks a keyword that has a preplanned typography prepared to accompany the story and provide background detail or emphasis on topics. As the users walk, sisal plants continue to grow at high speed, filling the spaces around each person with more and more spiky plants. The floating objects, like an ear, will emerge from the corners in imaginary waves, giving time for each item to be examined by the viewer, clicking or selecting the objects will open a new text window that loads a story for each one and has special interactive links within the story for keywords and topics to explain. The core concept of this exhibition is to facilitate a conversation between two generations and reflect the shadow of this neglected period of history onto our present-day worldview. How did California become the home of pioneers that pushed the experimentation of digital art from image design to video productions? To understand the background of the graphic design industry in California, Lousie Sandhaus writes in detail on what sets Los Angeles apart from the east coast, and even European modernism design styles that set the precedent. Every location has special characteristics, like climate and human capital that create cultural hotspots we will compare to understand the specializations of the golden state, California. To settle on a certain category of design, motion graphics is a great example of organic California produce, and we will serve dishes of heirloom history and modern day hybrids for a taste of where the field is going. And finally, the dinner would not be complete without a word from the chef, many female designers that have taken advantage of the freedoms in California to set styles and break boundaries for new designers to follow their lead. 1. Disney to Dieting: The Land of Image Worship When we think of the west coast, Disney has long been a representation of the imagination, creativity and the willingness to dream first and then make reality happen according to that plan. Why can such a visual-forward culture be so successful here? Even today, the importance of image and appearance are evident in lifestyles representative of the region such as athleisure to high end fashion, bodybuilding to yoga, and from nail manicures to plastic surgery. The spirit to boldly shape and design your image runs in almost every aspect of life, especially in this beach body environment. In terms of designers practice, “Lustig recognised California as a place free from the burden of the European cultural ideas that dominated the east coast, and he credited this liberation for his ability to ‘see freshly and unencumbered’” writes Sandhaus in describing Alvin Lustig’s “crucial role in giving American design a modern face.” The fact that California began to originate new and unconventional styles was faced with some criticism from the established design community. On the works of Merle Armitage: “He was considered by traditional designers to be an outlaw and was often criticized, but he could not have cared less. He helped liberate American book typography from convention.” The printing industry at the time, was primarily located on the opposite coast of the US, so the fact that design progress could occur without being located in the heart of this industry shows that these outlaws didn’t need to be in the center of the production to start making an impact on the American vernacular. You need to know the rules in order to break them. The maverick spirit in California was notwithout respect for the fundamentals, in fact Keith Godard and Louis Danziger, of CalArts, are credited with beginning what may be the first class to teach the history of graphic design in the entire United States. 2. Glaciers, Geysers, Typhoons, and Tropical Islands Regional influence on aesthetic vernacular is an insightful way to compare the independent styles and factors that give California its unique palette. How does the landscape that artists reside permeate into the work they create? To expand along this line of inquiry, I will draw comparisons from two opposing ends of the geographical spectrum: my home country of semi-tropical Taiwan, and the subpolar oceanic nation of Iceland. Starting from the top, Icelandic visual arts and media have always been in the back of my mind because of their floating rhythms, muted earth tone colors, and surreal 1Bjork-esqe costumes that contain distinctive, almost spiritual charm. California, on the other land, and its love for sunset-sherbert-citrus orange can be partially attributed to the oceanside landscape and year round beach going culture that has grown along the west coast. For example, the emblematic poster by Jon Van Hamersveld: The Endless Summer. This visual inspiration contains more though, “The bright palette refers not only to sunlight and reflections and flora, then, but to the local culture(s) and an extreme degree of social diversity, too.” For example, California is also the mixing pot of eastern, western and indigenous american cultures, with a social “temperature” warm enough to melt into a distinct style. Turning the temperature up a few more degrees, our next destination approaches: Taiwan. In contrast to the steady stream of good vibes in Cali, Taiwan is a torrent of sensations: scorching summer heat, frequent powerful typhoons and sweltering tropical humidity. This spirit appears in the visual language of our traditional ceremonies. Temples are adorned in a rainbow of intricate caricature sculptures, costumed Din Tao performers take on the form of giant gods with face paint designed to frighten ghosts, and the show often includes the intense sounds, smell and smoke of firecrackers exploding in piles of fire and light. It is not uncommon for Han Dan performers to be burned, bruised or temporarily deafened in the mayhem of celebration. The modern example of this spirit can be seen in 2Taiwan Pavillion’s Eatopia video for the London Design Biennale, showing traditional culture applied to the post-modern future. 3. Mercury, Mars and Earth When I first arrived at Calarts in the dry summer heat, the desert landscape scenery could have been Mars, and local artists certainly have created some “far-out” designs. Dating back to Harry Smith, whose pre-psychedelic short film Circular Tensions, was a prophetic visualization of the hallucinogen inspired visual language soon to be born in the free and funky California. In the notion of each of these design cultures as alien planets, Iceland would be the barren, isolated Mercury with even more out of this world experimentation, like 3Sigur Rós taking their celestial music and videos into an obscure vacuum-like, deconstructive dimension. The design style of Iceland is not only about simplicity, but rather a clean style that emphasizes its focal point. Imagine, a vast monocolored glacier guiding the observer's attention to the powerful waterfall slowly cutting through the ice; the experience of something so huge becomes encapsulated in the slightest environmental sensations like that of mist on our face, or the echoing sound of this scene. Then, of course what appears like planet Earth to me would be Taiwan because its lush greenhouse climate and densely packed urban landscape is where I grew up. A distinguishing factor of the design industry here is that we don’t have a media corporation like Disney, etc to unify such large scale teams of designers. Our network of local studios primarily focus on small projects until collaborations are arranged for an international event, like the Golden Horse Awards that make Taipei a cultural Hollywood for the greater Chinese community. In terms of local, indie artists, I have collaborated with the band 4Amazing Show to create a modern interpretation of the local specialization: sensory overload. Using an abundance of LEDs packed into custom electronic instruments, the band experiments with natural sound, programmed light and costume teleported from eras-past to bring our nostalgia into the future. Unlike other countries with more refined soft cultural exports, we have yet to polish and set in stone our own version. Taiwanese history contains a multitude of changing colonial powers, dyeing our cultural fabric with Dutch orange, Qing dynasty yellow, and Imperial Japanese Red all upon an ancient cloth of indigenous patterns. Family storytelling project, knowing that the stories from a generation before are so comparatively intense, how do we respond and cope with current realities after learning the historic background of our identity. Interview project and start from family but expand to the older generation of designers to collect experiences that can be combined with audio and a graphic in the archive. I'm investigating my own emotional and intuitive interpretation of Taiwanese identity through a set of design projects. My research project focusing on finding my ideatity as a Taiwanese designer, and exploring visual aesthetic of Taiwan, by studying historical, tecnological, cultural &amp; religous traditions, augmented by my family member’s oral storytelling and mundane pieces of life.I connect a set of values that I experienced first through my family - intimacy, timeliness, vulnerability, indivisibility - to the island where I grew up. I want to use design to consciously forage for my cultural roots...forming what I will call the Taiwan Gospel project - a series of projects practices that examine factors of geography, ideology, social behavior, and historical context that influence a Taiwan’sspecific place's visual development through in color palettes, patterns, and visual aesthetics. While some of my responses are based on direct experience, like the memory of oral stories I've listened to my father tell, others are based on my questions around a language I haven't fully learned or the complex funeral or wedding ceremonies that still confuse me, or the way that Taiwanese still practice fascinating, mysterious pilgrimage events. Using multimedia to investigate Taiwanese vernacular design, I will create immersive experiences to explore narratives from mundane family life to large cultural memories. 1.MemoryAR oral storytelling I first started exploring this wide topic of tackling the Taiwanese aesthetic by curating all the crazy oral stories my dad told and showcasing them into a surreal, fun, rich, imaginary AR exhibition. Just like visualizing the layers of my imagination after I heard all the stories from him, the audience will walk into a museum-style empty display room. Hanging from the ceiling scattered in random clusters will be old-fashioned bulky TVs that display the clips from my father's narration of each story in Mandarin. The guests will use AR to explore a second layer of the exhibition, which is my imagination of how these objects will all exist in a surreal, floating space that allows them to engage through the viewer's screen. In the AR layer, the stories enhance with a burst of text that visualizes when he speaks a keyword with preplanned typography prepared to accompany the story and provide background detail or emphasis on topics. The core concept of this exhibition is to facilitate a conversation between two generations and reflect the shadow of this neglected period of history onto our present-day worldview. I am fascinated by how mundane objects emit the charm of surreal magic through the power of storytelling. The story I wish to tell is about when my father was stationed on the frontier island Kinmen in the 80s as their only medical officer. The events, atmosphere, and daily life of people on this island are a unique lens to view the broader relationship between the two countries. Kinmen is the focal point of a cold war relationship locked into a decades-long stalemate. At the same time, locals continue to live under the influence of this tense atmosphere, fascinatingly- life continues ceaselessly. 2. HistoryDecolonize design and generative design approachTo investigate the vernacular design of Taiwan, I also started looking at more general cultural assets to study. Since I have been practicing design, I have started to grow love all the nostalgic motifs, all the handwritten signs on an old street, the colorful tile that would appear in everyone's grandparent's bathtub, the intricate wrought-iron pattern in old homes, the packaging design of local medical remedies from my parent's pharmacy through my childhood... But I wondered, all those old patterns and colors that lived in daily Taiwanese life were mass-produced and standardized; where are the customized designs from the old-time? Then I discovered Taiwanese Majolica tile. I chose tile as the format for my second imagery exploration because it originates in Spain, which along with Holland, was Taiwan's oldest foreign colonial power. This art, also a technology, was not introduced in Taiwan until the Japanese imported them in 1915 during the middle of their time as colonial power leading my island. In Japan, these tiles are relatively cheap and put into bathrooms. Still, when imported, it was an expensive luxury, so local craftsmen would install them into prominent visual positions outside the home to display their wealth. This tile is one of the first transfers of skills from outside the country that became a well-known local art form, and that artistic development led to visual designs in Taiwanese of many unique graphics. The art and visual design of these tiles are intricate symbols of blessings that have images of special representative cultural icons such as peaches and bats. My version of the nowaday majolica tile has another layer of AR filter to explore. By scanning on the tile, you can see each story of the family members I portray. To do this experiment a little further, I expanded my redesignedre-designed version of the tile with the power of generative computer design. And somehow, the algorithm generates many similar patterns seen elsewhere in Taiwan! For example, windows made of textured floral glass and the temple's carved ceiling. LanguageVernacular design in languageI developed a visual communication tool called Tai-roglyphics to re-design a typeface based on Taiwanese vernacular graphics. Due to historical context, many Chinese traditions only remain practiced in Taiwan. Not only do we retain the traditional Chinese characters to write and read, but we also preserve the Chinese phonetic alphabet (Zhuyin) to help us learn the pronunciation of Chinese characters. There is an internet phenomenon where Taiwanese use our Zhuyin alphabet to leave political messages online to avoid cyberbullying. This work reflects the crisis of self-censorship we are facing. After interviewing a Taiwanese Calarts alumni who did an identity-related project, we all share the concern and fear of drawing attention from Chinese internet monitoring that discovers us as Taiwanese independence supporters. Anyone that makes any media in the Chinese language has to walk on eggshells around the topic of Taiwan. This project introduces a "tool” in the form of an encryption system. This typeface gives artists, designers, and anyone with primary education in Taiwan a mechanism to combat Chinese censorship. Can the connotation of a specific color or shape give rise to our memory of the humid summer night market buzz? Can the motion of the light’s glow remind people of the ten days Mazu pilgrimage they walked along? Can a VR immersive experience let people understand the surreal charm and depth of our funeral ceremony? This VR Dream funeral story took place during my grandpa's passing and inspired this documentation process of both mundane and extraordinary details in the Taiwanese funeral ceremony. The goal of this project is not to create complete reenactments of funeral scenes. Instead, it is to give participants a point of common ground that sparks their memory to reflect on personal experience. Using my personal style of surrealism, I modified the design of traditional funeral cultural specimens to transform familiar objects into modern iterations.
